How to Become a Welder (Steps, Skills and Training)

To become a welder you finish high school or an equivalent, take technical training at a school or through an employer, prove your skill on a weld test, and then learn the rest on the job. What a welder does

Welders join and cut metal to a specification. The work is physical, precise and repetitive in stretches, and it is judged by whether the weld passes inspection — not by how fast it looked.

A typical day includes:

  • Reading and interpreting blueprints, sketches and written specifications before striking an arc (BLS, 2025).
  • Calculating and measuring dimensions, then marking out cuts and joint locations.
  • Inspecting the structures or materials to be welded — checking fit-up, cleaning mill scale, paint, rust or oil off the joint.
  • Welding materials according to blueprint specifications, using the process and position the job calls for.
  • Monitoring the weld as it runs and adjusting heat, travel speed or wire feed as necessary (BLS, 2025).
  • Maintaining equipment and machinery — changing contact tips and liners, checking gas flow, replacing grinding discs, keeping leads and regulators in serviceable condition.
  • Grinding, cleaning and presenting finished work for visual or non-destructive inspection, and repairing anything rejected.

Where you work: welders held about 437,700 jobs in 2025, and the largest employers were manufacturing (63%), specialty trade contractors (8%), self-employed workers (4%) and repair and maintenance (4%) (BLS, 2025). That means most welding jobs are in a shop or plant, with a sizeable minority on construction sites, in maintenance crews or working for themselves.

Conditions vary more than most trades. You may work outdoors in all types of weather, or indoors in a booth designed to contain sparks and glare, and you may work on a scaffold or platform high off the ground (BLS, 2025). Confined spaces, overhead positions and hot surroundings are all normal parts of the job in some sectors.

Schedule: many manufacturing firms run two or three shifts a day of 8 to 12 hours, so evenings and weekends are common (BLS, 2025). Construction and shutdown work tends to run in bursts — long weeks when a project is live, quieter stretches between. Maintenance welders are often on call for breakdowns.

How to become one

  1. Finish a high school diploma or equivalent and take any metalwork, shop, drafting or maths classes on offer. This is the typical entry-level education for the occupation (BLS, 2025). Time: as long as your school or adult-education route takes. Cost: usually none in public schooling, though an equivalency test may carry a fee — ask the testing centre for its current fee schedule.
  2. Visit two or three training providers and talk to an instructor before you pay anything. Technical training is available through high school technical education classes, vocational-technical institutes, community colleges, private welding schools and the U.S. Armed Forces (BLS, 2025). Ask each one: which processes do students run, how many hours are hands-on, what certifications do students test for, and where did last year's graduates go. Time: 2-6 weeks of visits and phone calls. Cost: none.
  3. Enrol in a welding program and complete it. A short certificate focused on one or two processes can run a few months; a two-year associate degree adds blueprint reading, metallurgy, maths and fabrication. Cost varies enormously between a public community college and an accelerated private school, and the spread is driven by program length, whether consumables and PPE are included, and local tuition rates — ask the registrar for the published per-credit or per-program fee and the lab/consumables fee in writing. Example to ask about: a structural plate course that takes you to a 3G/4G shielded metal arc welding test.
  4. Buy your own personal protective equipment early and use it from day one: an auto-darkening helmet with the correct shade range, leather jacket and sleeves, welding gloves, safety glasses, steel-toe boots and hearing protection. Time: one shopping trip. Cost: the spread depends mainly on helmet quality and whether you buy a full leather set — price a helmet at two local welding supply shops before ordering online.
  5. Complete OSHA-required training on electrical safety. OSHA requires welders to complete electrical safety training; other OSHA training is available but generally not required (BLS, 2025). Time: a short course, often hours rather than days. Cost: sometimes covered by your school or employer — ask first.
  6. Build a project that proves you can lay out, cut, fit and weld, not just run a bead. A welded steel workbench or a shop cart with square legs, clean corners and consistent fillets shows fit-up skill. Photograph it, and keep your cut-and-etch macro coupons from class. Time: 4-12 weeks alongside training. Cost: scrap steel and consumables.
  7. Test for a certification and check local licensing. The American Welding Society runs the AWS Certified Welder program, a professional certification credential (AWS). Ask a test facility what the current fee and prerequisites are. Separately, welders must be licensed in some states and localities; requirements vary, so contact the individual state or local government licensing agency where you intend to work (BLS, 2025). Time: weeks of prep, one test day. Cost: a test fee plus a retest fee if you fail — budget for one retest.
  8. Apply for an employer-based apprenticeship or an entry-level shop job. Some apprenticeships take entry-level workers with no experience; others target people who have completed vocational-technical welding programs (BLS, 2025). Expect a practical weld test at interview. Hard skills

  • Blueprint and weld symbol reading. You should be able to take a fabrication drawing and say what size fillet goes where, on which side, and to what length. This is listed first among what welders typically do (BLS, 2025).
  • Measurement and layout. Tape measure, combination square, framing square, scribe, soapstone, calipers and a level. Calculating and measuring dimensions is core to the job (BLS, 2025).
  • Arc processes. At minimum, shielded metal arc (stick) and gas metal arc (MIG); flux-cored for heavier structural work; gas tungsten arc (TIG) for thin material, stainless and pipe. Know which one a job calls for and why.
  • Machine setup and control. Setting amperage, voltage, wire feed speed and gas flow, choosing electrode or filler, and adjusting heat while the weld runs (BLS, 2025).
  • Grinding, cutting and fit-up. Angle grinder, oxy-fuel torch or plasma cutter, clamps, magnets and dogs. Bad fit-up causes more rejected welds than bad technique.
  • Visual inspection. Fillet weld gauges, checking for undercut, porosity, overlap and insufficient throat before someone else finds them.

Soft skills — BLS lists detail orientation, manual dexterity, physical stamina, physical strength and spatial-orientation skills as important qualities for welders (BLS, 2025). Show them like this:

  • Detail orientation: bring your coupons and photos to interview and talk through what you would change about each one. Naming your own defects is more convincing than a clean photo.
  • Manual dexterity and spatial orientation: ask to be tested in position — out of position work (vertical, overhead, 6G pipe) proves you can hold a torch steady and picture a joint from angles you can't see.
  • Physical stamina and strength: describe a real day you worked — hours on your feet, weight you carried, heat you worked in. Don't overstate it; the job will check.
  • Reliability on shift: two- and three-shift plants run to a schedule (BLS, 2025). A clean attendance record from any previous job is worth saying out loud.
  • Communication: explain how you flag a problem to a supervisor or inspector before you weld over it. Say what you'd do if a drawing and the part in front of you disagree.

Pay and outlook

Wages for welders vary with the worker's experience and skill level, the industry, and the size of the company (BLS, 2025). That is the honest answer to "what does welding pay" — the number attached to the job title tells you much less than the number attached to the sector, the shift and the certifications you hold.

BLS publishes a median annual wage for welders, cutters, solderers and brazers, along with a range showing what the lowest and highest paid tenths earned, and separate medians for the industries that employ the most welders — manufacturing, specialty trade contractors, and repair and maintenance (BLS, 2025). Things that push individual earnings up: certifications in processes and positions that are hard to staff, willingness to work nights, weekends or away from home, non-destructive-test-quality work where every weld is X-rayed, and moving from production welding into fabrication, fitting or inspection. Overtime and shift premiums matter more in this trade than in many others, because manufacturing plants run two or three shifts of 8 to 12 hours (BLS, 2025). Self-employment is a real route — about 4% of welders were self-employed in 2025 (BLS, 2025) — but it brings equipment costs, insurance and slow-paying customers with it.

The honest downside. Construction and shutdown welding is cyclical — good years can be followed by layoffs when projects finish, and travel welders live out of a bag. The conditions are genuinely hard: all weathers outdoors, confined spaces indoors, scaffolds and platforms high off the ground (BLS, 2025). Arc eye, burns, hot metal in a boot and long-term concerns about fume exposure are real, which is why ventilation, respirators and electrical safety training are not optional. The physical toll on knees, shoulders and hearing accumulates, and many welders plan a move into inspection, supervision or teaching before their bodies force it. Certifications also lapse or require continuity of work in the process — losing one because you spent a year on a different product line is a common and avoidable mistake.
